All that Jazz II

Parte deux da compilação que irei, pelos vistos, fazer duas vezes ao ano… 

Começo com o enebriante Honey Moon de Piero Umiliani aqui assinando como Rovi, um dos seus múltiplos pseudónimos (Catarro, L’Ingegner Giovanni & Famiglia, M. Zalla, Maestro, Moggi, Old Big Chief And His Magic Twenty Fingers e Tusco são outros que usou ao longo da sua carreira. Foi a mix Another Roses que o japonês DJ Mitsu The Beats editou em 2007 que me fez lembrar desse grande clássico do signori Umiliani gravado no disco Piano Fender Blues.

Salto logo para o recentemente editado Ella: The Lost Berlin Tapes, gravado em 1962 com a Mrs. Fitzgerald muito bem acompanhada pelo top trio composto por Paul Smith no piano e Stan Levey e Wilfred Middlebrook na bateria e no baixo respectivamente. Gravado em mono e estéreo pelo empresário fundador da Verve Norman Granz para a sua colecção pessoal em fitas há muito julgadas perdidas (daí o nome). Ella adorava tocar na Alemanha e este concerto no Sportpalast acontece 3 anos depois de uma famosa actuação no Deutschlandhalle onde havia gravado o seu “multi-grammificado” Mack the Knife: Ella in Berlin. Se não tiverem nenhum destes discos não consigo pensar em melhor auto prenda natalícia.

Pelo caminho vou passando por petits cadeaux dignos de qualquer sapatinho: Simone de Oliveira com O meu Pecado é Viver do album Pedaços de Mim produzido magistralmente em 2013 por Renato Jr; isso logo a seguir a um jovem Jordan Rakei com Wind Parade, intemporal composição de Donald Byrd aqui numa reavaliação editada em Outubro deste ano na compilação Blue Note Re:imagined.

Juntinhos aparecem Dear Limmertz dos Azymuth com De um Jeito Só interpretado por Ana Mazzotti pela simples e bela razão de serem ambos abrilhantados pela presença de José Roberto Bertrami nos teclados. Membro fundador dos Azymuth e que faleceu em 2012 é hoje muito bem substituído por Kiko Continentino (as actuações do grupo aqui, no Lisb-ON ou como banda suporte de Marcos Valle no B.Leza Clube foram sempre com ele a dedilhar o marfim).

Avizinhei também Michael Olatuja seguido do quinteto Benjamin Jephta para assim dar uma voltinha pelo jazz africano já que nesta enfiada passo pelo Soho londrino, por caves fumarentas italianas e esplanadas parisienses, por salas em Tóquio, São Paulo ou Nova Iorque…

Tudo para chegar ao tríptico final: 3rd Meter Stroll editado em 1974 pelo flautista sueco Björn J:son Lindh no seu quinto disco Boogie Woogie, seguido de Tropical do colectivo I Gres (sigla para a primeira letra dos nomes dos seus membros Giorgio Carnini, Roberto Pregadio, Enzo Restuccia e Silvano Chimenti).

E acabo em beleza com a Sun Ra Arkestra e Unmask the Batman, a face irreverente desta “banda à parte” conduzida, desde a morte e “regresso” de Sonny ao seu nativo planeta de Saturno, pelo jovem saxofonista de 96 anos Marshall Allen. Uso a palavra irreverente para descrever este tema porque diverge da construção a que a Arkestra nos foi habituando, nos temas celestiais e intergaláticos percursores de toda uma imagética afro-futurística. Melhor não poderia ser para ilustrar o velho motto predilecto de Herman Poole Blount: “The possible has been tried and failed. Now it’s time to try the Impossible”.

Que este fim de semana sirva para se cometerem proezas e façanhas, daquelas que se contam aos netos…

Part deux of a compilation that apparently I will be doing twice a year…

I start with the intoxicating Honey Moon by Piero Umiliani here signing as Rovi, one of his multiple pseudonyms (Catarro, L’Ingegner Giovanni & Famiglia, M. Zalla, Maestro, Moggi, Old Big Chief And His Magic Twenty Fingers and Tusco are just a few other he used throughout his career. I have to admit that it was the Another Roses mix that Japanese DJ Mitsu The Beats published in 2007 that reminded me of this great classic that signori Umiliani recorded on the Piano Fender Blues album.

I immediately  jump to the “recent” Ella: The Lost Berlin Tapes, recorded in 1962 with Mrs. Fitzgerald very well accompanied by the top trio composed by Paul Smith on piano and Stan Levey and Wilfred Middlebrook on drums and bass respectively. Recorded in mono and stereo by the entrepreneur and founder of Verve Norman Granz for his personal collection on tapes that have long been lost (hence the name). Ella loved to play in Germany and this concert at Sportpalast happens 3 years after a famous performance at the Deutschlandhalle where she recorded her “multi-grammified” Mack the Knife: Ella in Berlin. If you don’t have any of these records, I can’t think of a better Xmas auto-present.

Along the way, I go through some petits cadeaux worth of filling any stocking: Simone de Oliveira with O meu Pecado é Viver from the album Pedaços de Mim produced masterfully in 2013 by Renato Jr; this right after a young Jordan Rakei with Wind Parade, timeless composition by Donald Byrd here in a reevaluation that came out in October of this year in the compilation Blue Note Re: imagined.

Together I sow Dear Limmertz of Azymuth with De um Jeito Só sung by Ana Mazzotti for the simple and beautiful reason of both being brightened by the presence of José Roberto Bertrami on the keyboards. Founding member of Azymuth and who passed away in 2012 is today very well replaced by Kiko Continentino (the group’s performances here, at Lisb-ON or as a support band for Marcos Valle at B.Leza Clube were always with him strumming the ivories).

I also joined by the hip Michael Olatuja followed by the Benjamin Jephta Quintet so that I could take a ride through African jazz, since I did also stroll through London’s Soho, through Italian smoky cellars and Parisian terraces, through rooms in Tokyo, São Paulo or New York…

Everything to reach the final triptych: 3rd Meter Stroll published in 1974 by Swedish flutist Björn J: son Lindh on his fifth album Boogie Woogie, followed by Tropical by the collective I Gres (acronym for the first letter of its members names: Giorgio Carnini, Roberto Pregadio, Enzo Restuccia and Silvano Chimenti).

And I finish beautifuly with Sun Ra Arkestra and Unmask the Batman, the irreverent face of this “band à part” conducted, since Sonny’s death and “return” to his native Saturn, by the 96-year-old young saxophonist Marshall Allen. I use the word irreverent to describe this theme because it diverges from the construction that Arkestra has accustomed us, in the celestial and intergalactic themes that are precursors of an entire Afro-futuristic imagery. It couldn’t be better to illustrate Herman Poole Blount’s old favorite motto: “The possible has been tried and failed. Now it’s time to try the Impossible ”.

May this weekend serve to make and perpetuate feats and exploits, those that are told proudly to grandchildren …
