Silly Season II

Milagres e Romarias

“Please be stronger than your past / The future may still give you a chance” cantou George Michael em Cowboys and Angels, balada pop alva e sem mancha do album Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 gravado três anos depois do seu primeiro a solo, Faith.

I told Jesus be alright if you change my name

If you change my name

Then he told me, he said the world will turn away from you child

If I change your name

Roberta Flack – I Told Jesus

Then he took his contradictions out

And he splashed them on my brow

So which words was I then to doubt

When choosing what to vow

Joni Mitchell – The Priest

Rogers ou He’s My Friend de Rahni Harris & Family Love.

É ele mesmo que produz o album e que assim o define: “your ear will be turned toward the sound of the blues, to gospel, to the Black American church, often combined with the Carnatic singing style of southern India. You will hear beautiful harmonies influenced by Coltrane’s Detroit/Motown roots, her bebop roots, John Coltrane’s impact and her absorption of European classical music, particularly that of her favorite: Igor Stravinsky. Yet, at the same time, this is functional music. Its purpose is, with light and love, to praise the names of the Supreme. On this album, your heart and spirit will be turned toward divine inspiration and appreciation.”

I didn’t expect such madness to come out of this release—gold records, national top tens, number ones. I guess it was perfect timing for the music scene to have a track come along and slap it in its face.”

Me disseram, porém

In the 80’s I criss crossed many roads, in a country where celebrations and pilgrimages (right now completely prohibited) gave employment to our art of “giving music”. It was either the picking of tomatoes that created a peak of wealth culminating in a party hard  desire of scapism, it could very well be the Nossa Senhora da Agonia (Viana do Castelo), or of Remedies (Lamego), new fairs (Ponte de Lima) or the old one of São Mateus (Viseu), the Sanjoaninas (Angra do Heroísmo) or simply São João (Porto and much of the north of the country). Flores in Funchal or full of flowers like the Festas do Povo in Campo Maior. Spruced up villages, happy people filled with a good level of revelry. That’s how all rock and pop was made back then in Portugal and it was a recipe that created the circuit as we still knew it a short time ago, before these pandemic times.

Madredeus – A Vaca de Fogo

Of course, celebrations were the cause for these shows, but they would always reveal consequences in the artists’ future compositions. Sacred music, punk, electronica, R&B, soul and gospel, all “divine inspiration” sometimes comes not only from above, but also from the sides, for a composer with his feet on the ground and his head held high it’s the more mundane but no less strange details that elevate his writing into originality.

“They released a burning cow / With a man to lead”… well it was actually more than one man. These images contained in the most successful song on Madredeus’ first album relate to an episode lived by Heróis do Mar in northern lands where two villages took their place on the podium of popular rejoicing. Inside a bovine shell, three men from the village to the south “entered” the party further north where we were going to play with a load of pyrotechnics.

Certainly all musicians around the world will be able to attest to this game of cause and consequence, of a perception of the mundane as design of the divine: Fairuz who, by singing Dak Khilkeh, is only challenging the obvious that is “conquering His creation”; “I feel my dead tongue, the Latin will change”, in Reininho’s puns, we see a Video Maria, a Latina looking brunette… “if she’s a virgin or not, it depends on your fantasy”. Without an altar, there’s nowhere for you to stop and pray. And that’s why altars were the stages where we spread the word. Roughly mounted on beams, poles or tractors, without current at a necessary continuous 220 volts, but places where the cult grew.

“Please be stronger than your past / The future may still give you a chance” sang George Michael in Cowboys and Angels, an alb and spotless pop ballad from Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1, album recorded three years after his first solo effort, Faith.

Full of ecumenical design and pamphleteering fervor, the mummer troupes would continue these pilgrimages away from any “highway to hell”, the A1 ended a few kms after Lisbon, a trip to Trás-os-Montes was something we had to leave the day before. On the N1 there were mandatory road stops such as Bigodes or Máquinas or the malandrinho rice at Manjar do Marquês when it was still a small shack at a gas station. And to the south, with the A2 toll in Setúbal, it was mandatory to enter Alcácer do Sal with a stop to buy a bag full of those small shrimps from Sado.

If you change my name

Then he told me, he said the world will turn away from you child

Joni Mitchell – The Priest

And so the summer passed in an unrestrained whirl, many churches visited, almost all of them from a parish poorer than the sexton who spoke there. Fervor and hospitality were mixed in lands where little was a dowry and attribute shared with any stranger showing up to hum their grace. For better or for worse, it was like this that popular music got settled in the tastes of people looking for a little fun, in a country finally emerging into this new sense of acquired freedom. The cross was what we were carrying, that of Christ and of the emblematic words we sang. An Eden.

The procession is “already” in the forecourt, maybe it’s “of cats and the girl in front takes the sardines” to paraphrase Rosa Clement. It’s just that I haven’t yet mentioned the choices of this m4we… I start this week with 3 Etudes; No. 2, Slowly, Almost Lost from Dark Matters: Carillon Music of Stephen Rush by carillonist Tiffany Ng. Like the composer in question, Tiffany is also a professor at the University of Michigan and both perceive the vernacular similarity of the carillon (set of bells) with electronic music: a kind of tonal modulation is common to both, and in the hands of an excellent performer such as Ng the combinations are infinite and of quasi-divine result.

For more than obvious reasons I chose a lot of gospel, whether in a more disco sound form, Praise the Lord by the Psalms or more soul filled like the masterful All I Gave Him Was My Heart by D.J. Rogers or He’s My Friend by Rahni Harris & Family Love. Angel Eyes from Roxy Music’s Manifesto album had to be here. Just like Son Of A Preacher Man in Aretha Franklin’s monophonic version. Some unremitting artists featured in previous selections get to repeat: Benny Sings with Miracles, Heróis do Mar with A Gloria do Mundo, a song described one day by Tiago (Guillul) Cavaco as  “something that should be taught at school”. Daniel Reuss and Cappella Amsterdam are also present, this time with Cantiones sacræ sex vocum Ad Dominum cum tribularer.

Two special highlights for Alice Coltrane with Yamuna Tira Vihari and Josh Wink’s great acid classic Higher State Of Consciousnes. Kirtan: Turiya Sings, album of the godmother of spiritual jazz was recently released by Impulse recently. Originally put on cassette in 1982 only to be listened to by ashram students, it was re-discovered in 2004 by son Ravi Coltrane when he disenchanted a few never-before-heard recordings. It is he himself who produces the album and defines it as such: “your ear will be turned toward the sound of the blues, to gospel, to the Black American church, often combined with the Carnatic singing style of southern India. On this album, your heart and spirit will be turned toward divine inspiration and appreciation.

As for the raver anthem published on March 27, 1995 I can only recall that its impact is present not only in the myriad of electronic music sub-genres that came in its wake, from the Prodigy’s later-era grimy anthems to the filtered guitar freak-outs by Tom Morello. It’s almost a blueprint for using the TB 303 and for anyone who remembers being at a rave in it’s golden age, sweating, dancing and smiling while listening to the unforgettable, inescapable six minutes and such of the original Tweekin’ Acid Funk Mix that I leave you here.

The artist himself was surprised by the audience’s response to the song, explaining that “I didn’t expect such madness to come out of this release—gold records, national top tens, number ones. I guess it was perfect timing for the music scene to have a track come along and slap it in its face.”
