“I’m lying in my hammock, listening to Bach like an absolute twatcock”
Baxter Dury, filho do grande Ian Dury, em I’m Not Your Dog, faixa de abertura do album The Night Chancers editado o ano passado com maravilhosos arranjos de Joseph Davies.
Beijos y besitos. Bisous. Loads of kisses. Und küsse.

##############################
And behold, we’ve arrived at one more of those re-collections that bring together a little bit of everything that was left behind in previous weeks. That’s how it works every time I make a dozen M4wes.
Some of these songs could have been introduced in other selections, Hershey Bar feat. Sari Nakamura by Kenichiro Nishihara could’ve been at #037 when I digged into food but ended up appearing at #042, dedicated to Japanese music. Even so, it was only now that I could finally select it…
I have a special affection for these recaps because of the distance between them and the original concepts, thus demonstrating a more psychotic and visceral love for music as a living and tangent proof of our greatness as a species. Hence, I could sit down and listen to The Chicken Dance immortalized by Lawrence Welk wedged between Jimmy Witherspoon calling out Hey, Mrs Jones and an Overcome the Programming by AtomTM.
I start with Evening Shadows by Seaside Lovers, some kind of Japanese city pop super trio composed by Masataka Matsutoya, Akira Inoue and Hiroshi Sato, all of them have repeatedly been around here but this time they came together. The album where this track comes from, Memories In Beach House, dates from 1983, it is the only album they have made together and due to the virtuosity of the protagonists it should be cataloged under the label easy fusion.
I go through a lot, I repeat the East German (from when there were still such things) Uschi Brüning accompanied by the Günther Fischer-Quintett in Welch Ein Zufall but I find a way to insert Lenita Gentil singing Maria Madalena. I leap from the Soviet art-punk of Tibor Szemzo in Skullbase Fracture landing to Doug McKechnie in one of the first uses of a Moog in The First Exploration @ SF Radical Laboratories, 1968. A jump cut can take us from Agre Doce recorded in 1982 by Junior Mendes on his Copacabana Sadia record into a Drunken Spree by Skip James. You just have to try not to get lost in this maze.
But I reserve the best for last. Serge Gainsbourg signs Goodbye Emmanuelle in the soundtrack of the eponymous soft core film, also known as Emmanuelle 3 with the beautiful Sylvia Kristel and made in 1977 by François Leterrier. In the early 80s the film was the first release by Miramax, a new American production company started by the Weinstein brothers. It was this song that I chose for the thirty-ninth position, sending it to my guest, Luís Buchinho. The designer proved in half an hour why I like his work so much since in 1989 I photographed his clothes with João Silveira Ramos for the fashion section of Mais Semanário.
“I’m lying in my hammock, listening to Bach like an absolute twatcock”
Buchinho’s choice could not have been more accurate. Baxter Dury, son of the great Ian Dury, in I’m Not Your Dog, opening track of an album wonderfully arranged by Joseph Davies, The Night Chancers that came out last year. This song sounds like a CGSE French language exam but in hangover mode. The video, made by Tom Haines could not be more “gainsbourgian”, a Benidorm strip posing as Miami with Baxter abandoning the love for Gene Vincent inherited from his father for other liaisons dangereuses acquired later in life. Luis Buchinho admitted that “it was the first one that occurred to me after that French intellectual erotic feeling ?. And I love the chorus, connecting it to the Emanuelle environment”.
A mighty fine farewell as I prepare to take a break of these curatorial musical rides. I wish you some lovely weekends in the certainty that after a short vacation I will be back for a third season. Beijos y besitos. Bisous. Loads of kisses. Und küsse.
